The Storied Past Behind Night Owls at The Heartwood

September 17, 2026

There is a distinct shift that settles over the Hudson Valley each September. The canopy across Vassar College’s 230-species arboretum begins its slow, quiet turn toward ambe. The air sharpens with the scent of damp earth, and the campus paths fill once more with the cadence of returning thinkers, creators, and wanderers.

September is a season of beginnings, but at Vassar, new chapters are always anchored in the rings of history. When the dusk deepens, conversation migrates inward toward warmth, libations, and music.

At The Heartwood at Vassar, our evening lounge shares its name with one of the college's most spirited cultural institutions: Night Owls. To understand the soul of this intimate gathering place, one has to travel back more than eight decades to a library basement, a campus in quarantine, and a group of intrepid students who refused to let the quiet take over.

A 1942 Midnight Rehearsal: The Origins of the Vassar Night Owls

In the autumn of 1942, as global conflict shadowed daily life and a viral outbreak placed the Vassar campus under strict quarantine, normal routines ground to a halt. Gatherings were restricted, and campus spirits were tested.

Legend has it that sixteen young women slipped out of their residence halls late one evening, finding refuge down in the resonance of the library basement. They did not gather in protest; they gathered in harmony. Singing close-knit vocal arrangements, jazz standards, and spirited ballads, they serenaded isolated classmates across the quads, bringing light and connection to a darkened campus.

From that illicit late-night rehearsal emerged the Vassar Night Owls, the college’s first and oldest a cappella ensemble, and one of the earliest collegiate treble jazz singing groups in the nation. For generations since, the Night Owls have carried that pioneering spark. Balancing musical complexity with effortless charm, performing everywhere from campus archways to jazz clubs across the Eastern Seaboard.

From Campus Lore to Cultural Legends: The Voices of the Night Owls

The roster of the Night Owls has always mirrored the inquisitive, daring nature of Vassar itself. Each generation of singers has added their own distinct timbre to the group's repertoire, reshaping classic American jazz with modern resonance.

Among the ensemble’s most celebrated alumnae is Meryl Streep (’71). Long before she captured the world’s screen and stage with unparalleled versatility, Streep was an undergraduate walking these very arboretum paths, lending her vocal range to the Night Owls’ intricate jazz harmonies. Those close arrangements demanded precision, active listening, and a fearless presence, traits that define the legendary actor to this day.

Streep is part of an unbroken lineage of Vassarians who embody the group's founding spirit: unafraid to speak up, unbothered by convention, and always eager to turn an ordinary evening into an unforgettable performance.

Pull Up a Chair and Talk to Strangers: Night Owls at The Heartwood

Just as the musical ensemble transformed quiet nights into celebrations of harmony, Night Owls—the cocktail bar nestled inside The Salt Line at The Heartwood at Vassar—was created as a haven for evening conversation.

When the day's lectures conclude and dinner plates are cleared, Night Owls comes to life. Bathed in warm honey tones and the gentle rhythm of curated playlists, the bar invites you to linger. Our guiding ethos is simple: Talk to Strangers. Here, the answers to life’s lingering questions might just be sitting on the barstool right next to you.

Libations Grounded in the Valley

Our beverage program takes direct inspiration from our Hudson Valley surroundings. Behind the bar, craft cocktails highlight regional distillers, orchard botanicals, and small-batch bitters:

  • Curated Signatures: Thoughtful pours that balance aromatic complexity with classic bar craft, evolving with the seasons.

  • Local Hudson River Sourcing: Hard ciders, craft brews, and New York spirits reflecting the agricultural richness of Dutchess County and beyond.

  • Zero-Proof Artistry: Botanical, complex non-alcoholic concoctions crafted with the same nuance and care as our spirits.
